Forecast Discussion

154 PM PDT Wed Sep 8 2010

Synopsis...An upper low will slowly exit the region tonight and tomorrow giving showery conditions. A very weak upper ridge will push in Friday for temporary improving conditions before another upper low moves near Washington early next week.

Short term...Radar shows isolated to scattered weak echoes mainly near ksle. Threat for showers continues tonight in unstable air mass though cap at 10k ft will make it hard to get any thunder especially with such a narrow cape profile. Next couple of days the big story is a weak ridge that begins to move over the area with some residual moisture remaining. This makes it a little difficult to assess if there will be showers lingering so kept slight chance in there for some potential since models still indicate some potential for precip. Chances for some precip increase towards the weekend as a system approaches but looks like main threat should be in the north of our area. Cooler than normal temps continue into the weekend. Wolfe

Long term...Made minimal changes to the extended forecast this afternoon. A weak but persistent ridge will characterize the forecast through the weekend and into early next weak...with shortwaves rotating through to the north of the forecast area. The resultant onshore flow will keep clouds around especially in the nights and mornings...but precipitation is looking rather light and mainly confined across the north. Mid range models indicate a stronger trough will approach the forecast area by mid week next week which May increase precipitation across the area. Brown

Aviation...Not much change through 06z. Mostly vfr conditions across the region...but do have persistent pockets of mvfr cigs...mainly near and over the Cascades. Onshore flow will ensure that cigs will reform later tonight...with mostly mvfr on the coast and n interior...with mix of mvfr and vfr inland to s of Salem. Kpdx and approaches...mostly vfr this evening...but will see brief mvfr cigs of 2000 to 2500 thru at least 06z. Afterwards...should see mvfr cigs reform and become more dominate by 10z.rockey.

Marine...Weak high pres will remain over the ne pac for next several days. This keeps winds generally less than 15 kt. Due to location of the high...will see more w to sw winds over the n waters with w to nw winds over the central coastal waters. Seas not too bad with generally w to nw swell of 5 to 6 ft through Fri.

Pqr watches/warnings/advisories... Or...none. WA...none. Pz...none.
